Backpacking North was founded in 2009 by Mark Roberts, a photographer and visual artist based in Rovaniemi on the arctic circle, in Lapland, Finland. It has rapidly become one of the most popular hiking blogs in Finland, with a worldwide readership of around 40,000 page views per month (as of May 2013).
The blog focuses mainly on lightweight and ultra-light hiking and backpacking in the northern Nordic region (Finland, Norway, Sweden) with some excursions further afield (for example a period spent in the USA between 2009–2011).
The blog content comprises trip reports, gear reviews, ultralight hiking philosophy and techniques. Gear reviews are typically based on items purchased by the author unless otherwise stated.
Backpacking North welcomes the opportunity to test gear and equipment, and provides this as a service to the community and the furtherment of ultralight backpacking as backpacking practice. Reviews are therefore independent, unbiased, honest, and critical. At the same time we make every effort to promote the products we love and believe will benefit readers. If you have a product you want tested, please contact us.
